Making Mosquito-Repelling Candles With Essential Oil Blends

Citronella essential oil is a great mosquito repellent in candles, but you don’t have settle for just that scent in your outdoor candles. There are a number of widely available essential oils that are also known to help repel mosquitoes including: 1.Citronella 2.Clove 3.Cedarwood 4.Lavender 5.Eucalyptus 6.Peppermint 7.Rosemary 8.Lemongrass 9.Rose Geranium Each oil has its own characteristics that blend differently with the citronella. Here are some blends to use as a starting point. If you don’t have a particular oil, feel free to substitute or adjust as you see fit. Each of the recipes has at least 1/3 citronella. Simple and Spicy A simple natural blend with the wonderfully sweet and spicy notes of the clove oil. 5 parts Citronella 5 parts Lavender 5 parts Clove Bright and Energetic Likewise a simple blend, but substituting the peppermint for the clove changes it into a bright, energetic, and sweet blend. 5 parts Citronella 5 parts Lavender 5 parts Peppermint Deep and Green A more complex blend with mostly “green” scents including wonderfully dark and smoky cedarwood. 10 parts Citronella 10 parts Cedarwood 5 parts Eucalyptus 5 parts Rosemary Sweet and Citrus Just a little lemongrass added to the mix blends well with the citronella. The rosemary and cedarwood add complexity and a base note to the blend. Note: The lemongrass has a fair amount of the same constituents as the citronella oil, the amount of citronella is reduced. 5 parts Citronella 5 parts Lemongrass 5 parts Lavender 5 parts Rosemary 5 parts Cedarwood Lightly Floral Here just a little bit of Egyptian Rose Geranium brings out the floral qualities of the lavender and balances out the citronella. 5 parts Citronella 5 parts Lavender 5 parts Geranium 5 parts Rosemary Remember, these are just starting points for your own experimentation. Enjoy your citronella candles and the outdoors! The original written by David Fisher

How to Make Scented Pine Cones With Essential Oils

Pine Cones make for attractive seasonal home decor throughout the fall and winter months. They're festive while not being so seasonally specific that they're only good for one holiday. And you can take these natural decor items to the next level by using pine cones scented with essential oils. Scented pine cones add subtle fragrance to a room while being visually appealing, too. You often can find scented pine cones for sale at grocery and craft stores during the fall and winter, but it's very quick and easy to make your own at home. Plus, if you forage for your own pine cones, this project is virtually free (unless you need to purchase essential oil). Once you have your scented pine cones, there are numerous ways to use them. For instance, you can work them into garlands or wreaths, or you can simply place them on the mantel. They also make great seasonal gifts. 1.Prep Your Pine Cones The only downside to collecting pine cones from outside is they're likely to have dirt, sap, or even small bugs on them. But don't let that deter you. It's easy to clean them.Simply give the pine cones a good rinse in the sink. Don't use dish soap, as the scent can linger and interfere with the essential oils you're going to add later. Then, place the pine cones on a foil-lined cookie sheet. Bake them at a low heat (roughly 200 degrees Fahrenheit) for about an hour. Baking works to preserve the pine cones. Keep an eye on them throughout the entire baking process. (While burning isn't likely, turn off the oven immediately if you see the pine cones start to burn.) Finally, remove them from the oven, and wait for them to cool before proceeding to the next step. 2.Apply Essential Oil To scent your pine cones, choose any essential oils that you like. While many people prefer to use cinnamon because it's associated with the fall and winter months, other good options include citrus, vanilla, peppermint, and even pine essential oils. You can apply just one type of oil, or you can mix and match. For instance, cinnamon and vanilla blend together to form a pleasant, warming aroma.Place the pine cones in a gallon-size zip-top bag, and pour at least 10 drops of essential oil right inside. You can always add more drops if you feel the scent isn't strong enough. Seal and shake the bag to spread the essential oil on the pine cones, and then leave them in the bag for a week. Finally, remove them from the bag, and make sure they're dry before using them to decorate. You also can use a spray bottle for a quicker and more uniform application of the essential oil. Fill the bottle with a few ounces of water and about 10 drops of essential oil to start. (You always can add more.) Then, spray the pine cones, and place them inside the gallon-size zip-top bag. With this method, they only need to remain in the bag for about a day because they've taken a more direct hit of essential oil thanks to the spray bottle. Finally, remove the pine cones from the bag, and let them dry...

About Thanksgiving: when is the US celebration of thanks, what is its history, and what do Americans eat for Thanksgiving dinner?

Americans will be preparing for what is arguably the biggest national holiday of the year - Thanksgiving, as it takes place on Thursday. On 26 November, the last Thursday of the month, people all around the US will spend time with their loved ones, feast on turkey dinners and pumpkin pie and are expected to watch a record-breaking amount of television. But what is the history of the event - and why do they eat pumpkin pies and turkey dinners? Here is how it all began. How did Thanksgiving start? Thanksgiving originated as a harvest festival, with a huge feast being the centrepiece of celebrations. The event comes from what the Americans call the ‘First Thanksgiving’, when the pilgrims hosted a celebratory feast after their first successful harvest in 1621. The Wampanoag, a North American Indian tribe, had called a truce with the pilgrims who had settled on their land in 1620. The 1621 celebration is believed to be the first shared feast since an end to unrest between the two groups. What food was typical on Thanksgiving? In the early days of Thanksgiving, Americans would spend days praying and feasting on seasonal produce as a means of showing appreciation for military victories, successful harvesting and good health. However, there was no pumpkin pie at the dinner table in 1621. Instead it is likely they would have feasted on corn, venison and porridge as this was the most common and abundant harvest and game available. What food does Thanksgiving dinner consist of today? Today, Thanksgiving is known for huge turkey dinners with mashed potato, trimmings, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pies for dessert. Well-known writer Sarah Josepha Buell Hale - also known as the ‘Godmother of Thanksgiving’ - campaigned to have thanksgiving made into a national day of celebration, and according to Time Magazine, she published recipes of turkey dinners, stuffing and pumpkin pie in the 1800s. It is thought that Americans then associated these dishes with the annual holiday and so the tradition began. Turkey is thought to be included in the dinner as it is native to North America, and its size makes it perfect for large feasts. Pumpkins, which are ready to be picked between September and November are also native to North America, making them the perfect root vegetable to enjoy at Thanksgiving. When did Thanksgiving become a national holiday? Although Thanksgiving can be traced back to the 1600s, the national holiday has only been acknowledged formally since president Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of Thanksgiving in 1863. This was thanks to aforementioned editor Sarah Josepha Buell Hale, who campaigned for it to become a national day of thanks after learning of the 1621 harvest. Following this, all presidents who succeeded Lincoln also announced an annual celebration, until in 1941 the Congress proclaimed it a national holiday. The president at the time, Franklin D. Roosevelt formalised the fourth Thursday of November the official holiday, meaning the actu...
